Consumerism is a major social issue because it shapes behavior, identity, and society. Modern consumer culture encourages constant acquisition of goods through advertising, sales promotions, and visual cues like bright signage. Over time, this can lead to compulsive buying, material obsession, and environmental consequences. By examining how consumption affects mindset and decision-making, artists can critique the system and provoke reflection on the influence of commerce in daily life.
Warped Mindset uses black-and-white photography with selective color to emphasize how commercial messaging captures attention. Similar to Warhol, Kruger, and Jordan, I focus on repetition and visual cues to critique consumerism, drawing attention to the ways individuals are conditioned to respond to sale-driven environments. Each photograph explores the psychological pull of advertising and encourages reflection on our own participation in consumption culture. As I was taking photos, I noticed that the color red is used alot. To me red is YELLING and SCREAMING at you. Just as a Stop Sign does. I wanted to build a relationship between the two, or maybe they already have one.
